BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. - The Gardner-Webb (8-8) baseball team struck for three runs in the first two innings before using stellar pitching in a 3-0 win over Youngstown State (1-12) during game two of the series on Saturday afternoon inside John Henry Moss Stadium.
Redshirt sophomore
Jaden Stockton tossed 4.0 innings while giving up just two hits and striking out four, earning his first win of the season. Junior
John Pfeffer secured the save after going 2.0 innings with three strikeouts.
The Runnin' Bulldogs struck first in the home half, playing a single run after redshirt senior
Nick Capozzi drew a bases loaded walk, scoring junior
Merik Carter who started the at-bat with a base on balls.
That lead ballooned to 3-0 in the second following an RBI hit by junior
Tanner Thomas and a defensive miscue by the Penguins shortstop.
That would be all the run support needed as GWU used three pitchers for the combined shutout. Gardner-Webb will return to action tomorrow afternoon for the third and final game of the series with Youngstown State. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m. on Bill Masters Field.
