McBride’s Late Goal Lifts Runnin’ Bulldogs To Victory in Big South Opener

CLINTON, S.C. — Julia McBride scored her team-best sixth goal in the 82nd minute as the Gardner-Webb women's soccer team earned a 2-1 victory over Presbyterian in the Big South opener for the Runnin' Bulldogs Wednesday evening at Martin Stadium at Edens Field.
McBride's match-winner ties her with two others in the conference with six goals and was her second goal in as many matches for Gardner-Webb. With the victory, Gardner-Webb improves to 4-5-1 overall and 1-0 in conference play while Presbyterian is 2-5-1 overall and 0-2 in the league.
Both teams were locked in a battle early as the Runnin' Bulldogs managed a pair of shots in the first 15 minutes of the match.
In her first start of the season, Lydia Robinson came through with three of her six saves in the first half to keep the match level. The first goal came with just over two minutes remaining in the opening half as Eleni Lagusis got Gardner-Webb on the board via an assist from Noor Reslan.
The Blue Hose got the equalizer in the 78th minute but the Runnin' Bulldogs answered with McBride's winner less than four minutes later off an Andrei Chavez assist. Shots were nearly even as Gardner-Webb finished with 14 shots, four on target, while Presbyterian had 15, including 11 in the final 45 minutes.
McBride led the Runnin' Bulldogs with three shots while Gigi Sweet and Zoë Marqué each had two. It is the second consecutive year that Gardner-Webb has defeated Presbyterian in conference play.
The Runnin' Bulldogs are back in action at Charleston Southern on Saturday. Kickoff is scheduled for a 3 p.m. start.
