CHARLESTON, S.C. –
Dom Peroni launched a solo home run in the top of the 11
th inning to lift Gardner-Webb past Charleston Southern, 5-4, in Friday evening's Big South Conference series opener.
Peroni led off the top of the 11
th inning for Gardner-Webb (20-16, 19-8 Big South) by launching the first pitch he saw from Charleston Southern (13-19, 13-15 Big South) reliever Jordan Bridges over the center field fence, giving GWU the 5-4 lead.
The Buccaneers threatened in the bottom of the 11
th, loading the bases with two outs, but GWU reliever
Isaac Campbell thwarted any walk-off attempt, fanning Dylan Stewart to seal the contest.
Gardner-Webb held a 4-2 lead as play headed to the bottom of the ninth inning, scoring once in the top of the ninth as a fielding error by CSU second baseman Stewart allowed
Keiji Parkhurst to cross home plate. Charleston Southern sent the game to extra innings as Brooks Bryan launched a two-run home run to left field to knot the score at 4-4.
The Bucs scored the first runs of the evening in the bottom of the fourth, plating a pair of runs on a base knock by Reid Hardwick.
GWU answered in the top of the fifth inning as Parkhurst went deep to right field to tie the game at 2-2, his seventh home run of the season.
Neither team scratched again until the top of the eighth inning as Gardner-Webb took its first lead of the evening as a base hit by
Cam Pearcey, followed by a fielding error by CSU center fielder Tyrell Brewer allowed
Mitch McLendon to scoot across home plate.
Gardner-Webb totaled eight base hits throughout the evening, with Pearcey (2-for-5) and
Eric Jones (2-for-5. 2B) pacing that effort.
Langdon Wilson (3-1) earned the win on the mound for the Runnin' Bulldogs, tossing 1.1 scoreless frames, scattering three base hits with one strikeout.
Mason Miller had another quality start, hurling 8.0 innings, allowing two runs on five base hits with 11 strikeouts. Campbell recorded the final two innings of the night with one strikeout to record his third save of the season.
Charleston Southern collected 10 hits on the night, led by Kyle Sandstrom (3-for-5) and Johnny Oliviera (3-for-5. 2B).
Bridges (1-2) took the loss for Buccaneers, giving up one run on one hit in one inning of work. Starter R.J. Petit lasted 7.1 innings, allowing two runs on five base hits with six strikeouts.
The series continues tomorrow with a doubleheader beginning at 1:00 pm. Both games will be broadcast live on ESPN+ (WatchESPN.com / ESPN App).
