Gardner-Webb Baseball Drops Series Opener Friday Night At Georgia Tech

Gardner-Webb (27-14) went up quickly, as Curtis Robison belted a solo home run with one out in the top of the first for a 1-0 lead. The Yellow Jackets (24-18) answered with three runs in the bottom of the second to surge in front, but the Runnin' Bulldogs had an answer.
Peter Capobianco walked in the second inning, and Bo Rusher III followed with a two-run homer to tie the game.
Georgia Tech rallied again with three runs in the bottom half and scored twice in the third, and once in the fourth, to seize control of the game.
Nate Anderson had a solo home run in the top of the fifth to pull Gardner-Webb within 9-4, but the Jackets got two runs in the seventh to reach double digits. Trevor Mattson collected his third hit of the night with an RBI single in the eighth, and Georgia Tech responded with four runs in the eighth for the final margin.
Tyler Switalski (7-4) took the loss on the mound, allowing nine runs on nine hits in 4.0 innings of work. The sophomore struck out a pair. Joe Miceli and Luke Goodyear closed out the game, with Goodyear working through an inning without allowing a run.
Gardner-Webb managed 10 hits, with Mattson (3-for-4) leading the way with a pair of doubles and three base knocks. Robison (2-for-4, HR, RBI), Anderson (2-for-4, HR, RBI) and Rusher (2-for-3, HR, 2 RBI) also had multiple hits in the game.
Georgia Tech had 14 hits, with Jackson Finley going 3-for-4 with a pair of long balls and five RBI to pace that effort. John Giesler and Stephen Reid also had home runs.
Ben King (4-0) picked up a relief win for the Jackets, going 2.2 innings with only one run allowed on two hits.
The two teams will resume the series on Saturday afternoon at 4:00 pm in Atlanta (ACC Network Xtra / WatchESPN.com).
