CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Following a perfect 2-0 start to Big South Conference play, Gardner-Webb women's soccer players Maddie Turlington and Keely Brown were honored by the conference for their performances against USC Upstate and Radford.
Turlington (Roanoke, Tx. / Byron Nelson HS) was named the conference's Attacking Player of the Week, while Brown (Cincinnati, Ohio / Cincinnati Christian School) was selected as Defensive Player of the Week.
The duo helped lead the Runnin' Bulldogs to two wins over Big South opponents last week, defeating USC Upstate, 3-1 in midweek action, before topping Radford, 2-1 on Saturday night.
Turlington accounted for three of Gardner-Webb's five goals and scored her first collegiate goal in the victory against the Spartans of USC Upstate.
"Maddie has been creating dangerous opportunities for herself and her teammates, so it was good to see her get her first collegiate goal on Wednesday and then follow it up with two more on Saturday," said head coach Mike Varga.
In the 36th minute of Wednesday's match, Kayla Curatolo sent a corner kick inside the six to Turlington, who placed the ball in the back of the net to give the 'Dogs a 3-1 lead, which would stand for the remainder of the contest.
In Saturday night's match against Radford, Turlington scored both of the Runnin' Bulldogs' goals in the 2-1 victory. Her second and third goals of the year came just five minutes apart, happening in the 23rd and 28th minutes respectively.
In the 23rd minute, Samuelle Grove earned a corner kick and sent the ball into the center of the box where Turlington received it and headed it into the back of the net to give Gardner-Webb the 1-0 lead.
Five minutes later, Turlington scored again, this time from 20 yards out as her shot went through the legs of Radford keeper Courteany Kaplan. Her goal extended GWU's lead to 2-0, and the Runnin' Bulldogs would go on to win the match, 2-1.
The Roanoke, Texas native has scored three goals and recorded five assists this season. Her 11 points are second on the squad.
In goal, Brown had a stellar week, earning two victories and allowing just two goals. Against USC Upstate, she made one save in 76 minutes, before making 10 stops in a complete match on Saturday night.
Her 10 saves against the Highlanders were the most since she stopped 10 attempts against Marshall as a junior.
The Runnin' Bulldogs will return to action on Wednesday, September 26, as they travel to Winthrop University to battle the Eagles, who are also 2-0 in Big South play. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. from Rock Hill, S.C.
